Each day this week, around noon, Matador Records will release a brand new, free MP3 from the April 22nd release Earles and Jensen Present…Just Farr A Laugh Vol 1 & 2 (The Greatest Prank Phone Calls Ever!). Before enjoying today’s MP3, please take a second to read my capsular (that’s twice in twenty-four for that word) assessment of the call:

Long before the “Yacht Rock” short films began espousing their pedestrian, cynical (some could say “hateful”) take on what is officially termed “Afternoon Rock” (I coined that in 1995, thank you), long before hot indie personalities attached themselves to Afternoon Rock talent in the name of the attempted (and failed) irony-killer ‘This-Is-Great-Pop-Music’, Jeff and I executed this first-take wonder. Actually, it’s primarily Jeff, as I contribute little more than the call’s introduction. One major punch line: Christopher Cross is purportedly a really nice guy that somewhat lives up to his pillow-y disposition. Jeff’s interpretation of Cross as an explosively delusional lunatic? Nothing short of comedy gold. This call is also a tribute to Arthur Magazine; it’s common knowledge that “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” is solely responsible for the publication’s name. Until Excepter and Panda Bear provide backing for Paul Davis’ comeback album, this will have to do.

    C’mon, Yacht Rock was funny!

Also, I think that Afternoon Rock should just be considered a different genre…it seems to me that Sailing is Cross’s only Yacht Rock song (since it’s about being on a boat).

A link to the Afternoon Rock primer would be nice.
