Andrew Earles

Shameless Friend/Associate Plug – lightyearsvintage.com

Since my tireless attempts to hustle-up and/or complete various projects has resulted in no free time, very little prospects, and the resultant financial Defcon 4 over here, I figured it in the holiday spirit to take a moment away from the personal bad luck/bad times to direct attention (and hopefully…business) to the endeavor of friends/associates.

Maybe last minute shopping isn’t TOO last minute…..yet…..

Check out lightyearsvintage.com for your gifting needs. If it’s not a X-mas gift, I bet some readers need to extend that old chestnut: The post-fight/post-philandering peace pipe!

What to do? Well, I want five of my ten readers to visit that site. I have ten readers, right? Ok, I want four of my eight readers to visit that site.

Did you really think this post was going to conclude without some self-promo?

Earles and Jensen Present…Just Farr A Laugh Vol 1 & 2 (The Greatest Prank Phone Calls Ever!) is not so physically epic that it won’t fit in a stocking. Get the comedy release that makes both Britt Daniel of Spoon (scroll to mid-page) and Thurston Moore of the Coachmen (Last sentence…perhaps said privately? I don’t know, but he did dedicate some onstage/’tween-song banter to JFAL during this year’s ATP performance) laugh and laugh and laugh. Maybe these establishments will have it shipped bee-4 X-Mas. If not, no one turns away gifts that arrive on the 26th, 27th, 28th, or in March…no one ever turns away gifts. Keep that in mind.

Direct from the label…

From American Apparel, where E&J stands as the very first audio product to be offered by the popular and soft clothing comfort zone.

Leave a comment if you want my tardy X-mas wish list to be an entry in the immediate future.

Real life is embarrassing…

Check out these post-edit typos on a blog that must enjoy a 9,561.73% larger readership than this one! Check out my paranoia re: the repeated self-this/self-that/selfish/overindulgence references! Check out the typos (Tad entry, Willeford bio entry) in something I reread 821 times before submitting!! Check out my decision to omit Fucked-Up’s Chemistry of Common Life, fearing that it would look “ass-kissy” (a term said aloud last Thursday night…to an empty house) or confusing to the people that heard me saying “I’m not into this stuff” earlier in the year before slowly coming around to both the Matador and Vice-released epics, and then to include my own album at the last minute. Seeing as how I rarely finish books that I’m not enjoying early on (unless it’s bad crime fiction…I tend to complete those personal assignments), #1 is what I read in 2008, with a couple carrying over from beginnings in December ’07. Check out exactly what the fuck I’m going on about…

I need to leave town for a few days…how does Britt Daniels rate as a pet-sitter? …or… “Earles (and Jensen) Can Tell”

Pass it along. There’s a gently-worn copy of Robert B. Parker’s Potshot in it for him. What the hell am I talking about? Is this post REALLY the way I want to wake this blog up from its 4 – 5 day nap (almost reaching the middle-of-nowhere to visit family – Crossville, TN)???

Go to this page and scroll down to Mr. Daniel’s Best of 2008 (seriously, scroll down or the two Xui Xui Best-Of.. lists will infect you with narcolepsy).

Here’s the lazy route:

Britt Daniel, Spoon
Crooked Fingers: Forfeit/Fortune
The Heavenly States: Delayer
Jay Reatard: Matador Singles ’08
Carbon/Silicon: The Last Post
Wolf Parade: At Mount Zoomer
Deerhunter: Microcastle
Q-Tip: The Renaissance
Coin Under Tongue: Coin Under Tongue
Earles and Jensen: Just Farr a Laugh, Vol. 1 & 2: The Greatest Prank Phone Calls Ever!
The Walkmen: You & Me

The truth: I sincerely believe that Spoon/Daniel writes a better song than a great many of the other participants within those four pages. Full(er) disclosure: I’ve only heard three Spoon albums, and only own one in physical form (Girls Can Tell). Disclosure; Even Fuller: What some of the other participants create is a total mystery to me. I don’t have that much time!!

Order epic comedy album that (hopefully) still makes Britt Daniels laugh!!

“Stand-Up Comedy”

Memphis bookstores don’t have this section, but if it’s a different story in your town, or you find yourself actually standing within 20 ft. of the “Humor” section, or like myself, you continue to visit the “Music” section despite perpetual letdowns and infuriating discoveries, I invite you to check out Mock Stars: Indie Comedy and the Dangerously Funny.

This is a very self-serving entry, as Earles and Jensen Present…Just Farr A Laugh Vol. 1 & 2 gets six consecutive pages of bio coverage, I’m quoted throughout the book (this was a surprise….I expected all of my quotes to be contained in the E&J section…shows what I know about writing a bio! Good thing I’m writing a bio!), and I wrote a chapter-length sidebar, which this fine review puts into a nice and tidy paragraph:

Some of the best insights come from a sidebar written by Andrew Earles, half of the Earles & Jensen duo. In the short exercise. Earles takes Opening Night at Rodney’s Place, an HBO special that aired in 1989, and walks us through a set of performances that appear surreal now, dripping with the elements-silly gags that tell you when to laugh, sexism-as-a-punch line jokes- that contrast what indie comedy allows. It’s close to a manifesto for alternative comedy more than indie, but it’s still a “fascinating time capsule, a mess constantly grasping at straws, an overdose of unaware noncomedy” that highlights a turning point. Earles writes, “after examining Opening Night, it’s astonishing to consider that Mr. Show debuted in close to the same HBO time slot only six years later.”
